This mosque at Beruwela is believed to be the oldest in Sri Lanka. It was built by Arabs who accidentally landed in Sri Lanka around 920 CE after a stormy voyage. Reaching the shore, they had prayed to Allah and thanked him for saving them from a watery grave and had later established the mosque to mark the spot of their landing. There is an ancient burial ground adjoining the mosque where the bodies of these early settlers and several holy men lie. The mosque has undergone many phases of expansion over the years and can now accommodate around 3,000 devotees at prayer time. It is now a cultural heritage site declared by the Government.
