Green Philosophy

Aitken Spence Hotels represent a unique Green Philosophy that combines responsible tourism with environment friendliness. The hotel has a comprehensive energy conservation policy with power cut-off switches, energy efficient lighting (CFL bulbs) and photo active garden lights.

We adhere to a philosophy of sustainable development that encompasses the following areas:

  • Energy efficiency, conservation and management
  • Reduction of freshwater consumption
  • Waste water management
  • Minimization of waste, reuse and recycling
  • Air quality protection and noise control
  • Land use planning
  • Social and cultural development
  • Ecosystem conservation

Not a piece of paper or polythene is allowed to escape from the hotel into its surroundings. All the waste water of the hotel is painstakingly recycled. The conservation and recycling processes of the hotel are also designed to assist the social and economic growth of the villagers who live close to the hotel.

We are committed to conserving and protecting this unique natural and cultural environment for the benefit of posterity. Sri Lanka has particularly strict laws to protect the environment and wildlife. We are proud to say that Neptune Ayurveda Village not only complies fully with these laws, but we also go well beyond them; we take pleasure in our conservation work. We also respect the social and cultural sensitivities of the neighbouring communities, while assisting them economically. We purchase local products and services, and involve these communities in our environmental conservation work.

A Global Biodiversity Hotspot

The high diversity of plant and animal species within a limited land area has made Sri Lanka one of the 18 biodiversity hotspots in the world. Sri Lanka represents the richest biodiversity in the whole of Asia per square kilometre of land area. Many of the plants and animals found on this island are endemic. The island is home to more than 3,360 species of flowering plants, 1,920 fungi, 242 butterflies, 78 fresh water fish species, 322 non-migrant birds and 250 amphibians. The island also provides critical habitat for internationally mobile species including five species of endangered marine turtles, around 100 species of waterfowl and many other migrant birds.

There are 29 specific ecosystems all within easy reach of one another in a land area of 65,610 square kilometres, which is equivalent to the land area of West Virginia.
